Gear cut from sheet metal

Gear cut to size from sheet metal: you enter the dimensions, choose mild steel 1.5–5 mm, stainless steel 3 and 4 mm or aluminium 4 mm and see the price instantly - no CAD file needed, from 1 piece.

A hole can't be smaller than the sheet thickness, and the whole part must fit within 3000 × 1500 mm.

Drag the letter beside a field to adjust it smoothly. Arrow keys: one step, Shift: a larger step.

The DXF file is free: download it with no account and no order.

What it is for

  • A decorative mechanism, kinetic sculpture, clock, model or toy in which the gears are meant to turn and mesh.
  • A low-load drive, for example a hand crank, a feeder or an adjuster, where the gears don't carry large torques.
  • A prototype of a gearbox that you test on the bench before ordering turned or milled gears.
  • A teaching aid or a mock-up that shows how a gear train works: gears with different numbers of teeth and the same module.

What we don't do

  • The profile is an involute with a fixed 20° pressure angle. You enter from 12 to 200 teeth and a module from 1 to 10 mm. Below 12 teeth the profile would be undercut, so we don't offer such gears.
  • A laser-cut gear has a slightly tilted, bevelled tooth profile (the beam has a width, and the edge left by thermal cutting isn't ground), so it is not a precision gear. It suits decorative mechanisms, models, low-load drives and prototypes; it does not suit precision gearboxes.
  • We don't calculate tooth strength, load capacity, backlash or noise. The profile in the file is the dimension of the finished gear, as with every shape on this page: we add no fillet at the tooth root and don't offset the contour by half the kerf.
  • For two gears to mesh they must have the same module, and the distance between their axes is a = m · (z1 + z2) / 2, where z1 and z2 are the numbers of teeth of the two gears. With few teeth (below 17) the teeth may interfere slightly.
  • The tooth tip and the gap between the teeth at the root can't be narrower than 1.5 mm, so small gears need a larger module. With thicker sheet choose a larger module: the thicker the sheet, the wider the tooth should be.
  • The gear has a round hole only, with no keyway and no hub. For a keyway, relief holes or any other shape, draw the part in the editor or upload a DXF file.

Dimension limits

The editor accepts dimensions within these limits and tells you what to fix outside them.

  • Module: from 1 to 10 mm
  • Number of teeth: from 12 to 200
  • Hole diameter (0 = none): from 0 to 1498 mm
